Ankylosing Spondylitis Naturopath

Ankylosing spondylitis is an autoimmune form of inflammatory arthritis that primarily affects the spine and the sacroiliac joints connecting the lower spine to the pelvis. Over time, chronic inflammation can lead to new bone formation and, in more advanced cases, fusion of the spinal vertebrae, which is why early, thorough management matters.

As an ankylosing spondylitis naturopath and nutritionist clinic, our focus is on reducing the underlying inflammatory and autoimmune drivers, alongside supporting mobility and quality of life.

Common Symptoms of Ankylosing Spondylitis

  • Chronic lower back and hip pain, often worse in the morning or after rest
  • Stiffness that improves with movement and worsens with inactivity
  • Fatigue
  • Reduced spinal flexibility over time
  • Pain and swelling in other joints, including the hips, shoulders, and knees
  • Eye inflammation (uveitis), in some cases

Our Naturopathic Approach to Ankylosing Spondylitis

  • Gut health. Ankylosing spondylitis has a well-documented association with gut dysbiosis, and a significant proportion of patients also have subclinical gut inflammation. Read more about our approach to digestive health.
  • Anti-inflammatory nutrition. A whole food, anti-inflammatory diet to help reduce systemic inflammatory load over time.
  • Targeted herbal and nutritional medicine. Compounds such as curcumin and omega-3 fish oil have a growing evidence base for reducing inflammatory joint and spinal symptoms.
  • Movement and mobility support. While not a replacement for physiotherapy, nutritional and herbal support for tissue health can complement a broader movement-based management plan.
  • Stress and nervous system support. Chronic stress can worsen inflammatory disease activity, making nervous system support a genuine part of management.

Functional Testing We May Recommend

  • Inflammatory markers such as CRP and ESR
  • Comprehensive gut microbiome and stool testing
  • Food sensitivity testing
  • Nutrient status, including vitamin D
