Functional Testing

A Structured, Data-Driven Approach to Natural Healthcare

At The Naturopathic Co., our naturopaths and nutritionists use advanced functional testing to identify the underlying drivers of symptoms – rather than guessing based on surface presentation alone. For many people, the reason they have struggled to improve their health in the past is simple – no one has ever looked properly at what is actually happening inside the body.

Without functional testing, treatment often becomes guesswork. With advanced functional testing, we are able to see what was previously invisible – identifying imbalances that may be driving ongoing symptoms and developing highly targeted treatment strategies designed to produce real, lasting improvements in health.

We offer functional testing through in-person consultations at our South Yarra clinic at 54 Davis Avenue, and via telehealth for patients across Australia. Most test kits are delivered directly to your home, with clear instructions and full practitioner interpretation included as part of your consultation.

What Is Functional Testing?

Functional testing evaluates how your body is functioning at a systems level. Unlike conventional pathology focused primarily on disease diagnosis, naturopathic functional testing assesses patterns of imbalance across gut health, hormone function, nutritional status, metabolic health, immune activity, and inflammatory markers – often identifying clinically significant patterns that fall within the “normal” range on standard testing but are still contributing meaningfully to symptoms.

This is why so many patients come to us having been told their results are normal, yet continue to feel far from well. Functional testing looks deeper.

Testing We Offer

Gut Microbiome Testing & Comprehensive Stool Analysis

Advanced gut microbiome testing is one of our most important clinical tools – particularly for patients with digestive concernsskin conditionshormonal imbalancesfatigueweight concerns, and autoimmune conditions.

A comprehensive stool microbiome analysis can reveal bacterial diversity and composition, opportunistic bacterial overgrowth, yeast and candida levels, short-chain fatty acid production, gut inflammation markers (including calprotectin and secretory IgA), digestive enzyme activity, intestinal permeability indicators, and parasitic organisms. H. Pylori Testing

H. pylori testing is recommended for patients with gastritisreflux, upper abdominal pain, or nausea that has not been properly investigated. We use stool antigen testing or breath testing for accurate, non-invasive results. Read more about H. pylori.

SIBO Breath Testing

Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) is a frequently missed driver of bloating, gas, food intolerances, and IBS symptoms. SIBO breath testing measures hydrogen and methane gas production to identify bacterial overgrowth patterns in the small intestine. Read more about SIBO and gut dysbiosis.

Hormone Testing & Hormone Mapping

For patients with hormonal imbalances, hormone testing provides measurable clarity on what is actually happening – rather than treating based on symptoms alone. Depending on clinical presentation, we may assess oestrogen, progesterone, testosterone, DHEA, cortisol rhythm, and thyroid hormones.

Hormone testing is particularly valuable for patients experiencing PCOSendometriosisperimenopause and menopausePMSoestrogen dominancehormonal weight gain, and irregular periods.

Cortisol Testing

Standard blood cortisol testing provides only a single snapshot and misses the dynamic pattern of cortisol across the day. Salivary or urinary cortisol testing measures cortisol at multiple points and provides a far more accurate picture of adrenal function and HPA axis regulation. This is particularly important for patients with stress and adrenal fatiguechronic fatiguesleep problems, and anxiety.

Thyroid Panel Testing

Standard GP thyroid testing typically measures TSH alone – which frequently misses the full picture. A comprehensive thyroid panel includes TSH, Free T4, Free T3, Reverse T3, and thyroid antibodies (TPO and TgAb) to assess thyroid function, conversion capacity, and autoimmune activity. This is essential for patients with thyroid concernsthyroid-related weight issues, and unexplained fatigue.

Nutritional & Metabolic Testing

Subclinical nutritional deficiencies are among the most commonly missed contributors to fatigue, mood concerns, poor immune function, and cognitive symptoms. We investigate iron studies and ferritin, vitamin B12, folate, vitamin D, magnesium, zinc, omega-3 index, inflammatory markers, fasting insulin and glucose, HbA1c, homocysteine, and liver function markers.

This testing is relevant across virtually every condition we treat – including fatiguebrain foganxietyADHDinsulin resistanceslow metabolism, and systemic inflammation.

Food Intolerance & Sensitivity Testing

Food intolerance testing can help identify specific dietary triggers contributing to bloatingIBS symptomsskin flare-upsfatigue, and inflammation. Read more about food sensitivities and gut inflammation.

DNA & Genetic Testing

Where clinically indicated, genetic testing can provide insight into nutrient metabolism, detoxification pathways, hormonal processing, and inflammatory tendencies – allowing treatment to be tailored to individual genetic patterns.

Why Functional Testing Changes Outcomes

The difference between naturopathic treatment with and without functional testing is significant. Without testing, treatment is based on clinical assessment and symptom patterns alone – which is valuable but limited. With testing, we can see exactly what is happening inside the body and target treatment with precision.

This is particularly important for complex presentations where multiple systems are affected – patients dealing with chronic fatigueautoimmune conditionscomplex hormonal imbalances, or longstanding gut dysfunction almost always benefit significantly from a testing-informed approach.

Our Structured Approach

At The Naturopathic Co., we follow a clear, efficient process:

Appointment 1 – Comprehensive initial consultation, full case assessment, and personalised treatment plan. Testing is recommended where clinically indicated.
Appointment 2 – Review of test results, adjustment and refinement of treatment plan.
Appointment 3 – Optimisation, forward planning, and sustainability.

Most patients require 2-3 appointments to establish clarity and direction. Our model prioritises efficiency, precision, and measurable improvement – not open-ended treatment plans.
