I’m Yvette, a Melbourne naturopath and founder of The Naturopathic Co., an Australia-wide naturopathy business. Gut health is one of my key areas of clinical focus, and I work with clients from our South Yarra clinic as well as via Telehealth across Australia.
Below I answer some of the most common questions I’m asked about gut health and what working with a gut health naturopath can involve.
What does a gut health naturopath do?
A gut health naturopath looks beyond an individual digestive symptom and considers the broader factors that may be contributing to it.
When someone comes to see me with bloating, constipation, diarrhea or ongoing digestive discomfort, I want to understand the pattern.
When did it start? What makes it better or worse? What are their bowel movements actually like? Are particular foods triggering symptoms? Have they used antibiotics frequently? Are stress and anxiety involved? Are there signs that further medical investigation is warranted?
The aim is to understand the bigger picture rather than simply recommending a supplement for bloating or removing foods indefinitely.
What gut symptoms do you commonly see?
At The Naturopathic Co., some of the most common digestive concerns we see include:
- Bloating
- Constipation
- Diarrhea
- IBS symptoms
- Abdominal discomfort
- Excessive gas
- Food intolerances and reactions
- Irregular bowel movements
- Reflux and digestive discomfort
- Gut symptoms associated with stress and anxiety
Some people have experienced symptoms for years, while others notice a relatively sudden change in their digestion.
Can you help when my blood tests are normal but I still have gut symptoms?
This is something I hear frequently.
Normal routine blood results can be reassuring, but they don’t explain persistent digestive symptoms.
Depending on the individual, we may look more closely at diet, bowel function, digestive capacity, stress, medications, previous infections and other aspects of their health history.
Where appropriate, I may also discuss whether additional investigation through a GP, gastroenterologist or functional testing could be useful.
Do you offer gut microbiome testing?
Yes. Functional gut testing can be considered when it is clinically appropriate.
Depending on the person and their symptoms, this may include comprehensive stool/microbiome testing or breath testing.
Testing should answer a useful clinical question and ideally change what we do next. Sometimes a person’s history gives us enough information to begin treatment without testing, while in other cases testing can provide valuable additional information in terms of treatment and a clear path forward.
Is bloating always caused by food?
No.
Food can certainly contribute to bloating, but it isn’t the only consideration.
Constipation and delayed bowel movements, fermentation within the gut, altered gut bacteria, digestive function, menstrual cycle changes, stress and the gut-brain connection can all influence how bloated someone feels.
This is why simply continuing to remove more and more foods isn’t always the best long-term solution.
What does stress have to do with gut health?
Quite a lot.
Your gut and nervous system communicate constantly through what is commonly referred to as the gut-brain axis.
For some people, digestive symptoms become noticeably worse during periods of stress, anxiety or poor sleep.
That doesn’t mean the symptoms are “just stress”. Rather, nervous-system regulation can form one part of a broader gut-health treatment strategy.
Do you use restrictive diets for gut problems?
My preference is generally to avoid keeping people on unnecessarily restrictive diets long term.
Temporarily modifying certain foods is useful as part of a gut healing protocol, but the ultimate goal is usually to build a diet that is as varied and nutritionally adequate as the individual can comfortably tolerate.
Food shouldn’t become something you’re frightened of.
What does treatment with a gut health naturopath involve?
Depending on the person, a treatment plan may consider nutrition, fibre intake, bowel regularity, hydration, meal composition, stress and nervous-system support, sleep, exercise and targeted nutritional or herbal supplementation where appropriate.
If further medical assessment is needed, I will also recommend that.
How long does it take to improve gut health?
This varies considerably.
Someone with relatively recent constipation or bloating is very different from someone who has experienced IBS symptoms and extensive food reactions for ten years.
Rather than promising a quick fix, I prefer to identify the major factors that appear to be contributing to the person’s symptoms and work through them systematically. Normally we start to see improvements within the first couple of weeks for most people, and a standard gut reset will normally take between 1-3 months.
Can gut health affect other areas of the body?
The gastrointestinal system interacts with many other areas of health.
This is one reason I ask about much more than bowel movements during a consultation. Depending on the person, their broader health history may include changes in energy, skin, mood, menstrual health, sleep or immune function alongside their digestive symptoms.
Importantly, this doesn’t mean every symptom originates in the gut. It means the gut forms one part of a much larger physiological picture.
Where can I see a gut health naturopath in Melbourne?
I consult from The Naturopathic Co. in South Yarra, Melbourne, and we also offer Telehealth consultations for clients throughout Australia.
My approach to gut health is centred around understanding the individual’s symptoms and health history, identifying potential contributing factors and developing a practical treatment strategy.
If you’ve been experiencing persistent bloating, constipation, IBS symptoms, food reactions or other digestive concerns and feel that you still don’t have a clear understanding of what is going on, a naturopathic consultation can provide an opportunity to look at the bigger picture.
