Nervous System Naturopath: FAQs with Rebekah
August 20th, 2026 + The Naturopathic Co.

I’m Rebekah, a naturopath at The Naturopathic Co., and my key area of clinical focus is nervous system health.

I work with patients Australia-wide via Telehealth.

I commonly work with people experiencing ongoing stress, anxiety, overwhelm, poor sleep, fatigue and the physical symptoms that can accompany a nervous system that has been under pressure for a long time.

Below I answer some of the most common questions I’m asked about nervous system health and what working with a naturopath can involve.

What does a nervous system naturopath do?

A nervous system-focused naturopath looks at the broader factors that may be contributing to symptoms such as anxiety, feeling constantly stressed or overwhelmed, difficulty switching off, poor sleep and fatigue.

Rather than looking at one symptom in isolation, I want to understand what has been happening over time.

When did your symptoms begin? Are you sleeping properly? Do you feel tired but wired? Are you relying heavily on caffeine to get through the day? Has there been a prolonged period of stress? Are there nutritional or lifestyle factors that may also be contributing?

The aim is to understand the bigger picture and develop a practical strategy to better support the nervous system.

What symptoms do you commonly see?

At The Naturopathic Co., some of the concerns I commonly work with include:

Anxiety and feeling on edge
Chronic stress
Feeling overwhelmed or unable to switch off
Fatigue and burnout
Poor sleep or insomnia
Waking during the night
Feeling tired but wired
Brain fog and poor concentration
Low energy
Stress-related physical symptoms
Changes in mood and resilience

For some people, these symptoms develop gradually after months or years of stress. For others, they become much more noticeable after a particularly demanding period of life.

Can a naturopath help with anxiety and stress?

Naturopathic care can be used alongside appropriate medical and psychological care to support people experiencing stress and anxiety.

My approach is to look at factors that may influence how well the body is coping with stress, including nutrition, sleep, lifestyle, caffeine and stimulant intake, exercise, nutrient status and nervous-system regulation.

Where anxiety is significant or affecting your ability to function, I will also encourage appropriate support from your GP, psychologist or other mental health professional.

Why do I feel tired but wired?

This is something I hear frequently.

You may feel exhausted during the day but then find it difficult to relax or fall asleep at night. Some people describe feeling as though their body is tired but their brain simply won’t switch off.

When this happens, I look at the overall pattern: sleep quality, stress levels, caffeine intake, nutrition, exercise, workload and other factors that could be contributing.

Rather than simply trying to make you feel sleepy at night, we want to understand what may be keeping the nervous system feeling constantly activated.

Can chronic stress cause physical symptoms?

Yes. Stress isn’t only something we experience mentally.

Periods of prolonged stress can be accompanied by changes in sleep, energy, concentration, muscle tension, appetite, digestion and how resilient we feel from day to day.

This doesn’t mean that every physical symptom should be blamed on stress. Persistent or concerning symptoms should always be appropriately investigated.

However, nervous system health can be an important part of the overall picture.

Can poor sleep make anxiety and stress worse?

Absolutely.

Sleep and nervous system health are closely connected. Poor sleep can make it more difficult to cope with stress the following day, while stress and anxiety can make it harder to fall asleep or stay asleep.

This can create a cycle where someone feels increasingly exhausted but also increasingly unable to properly relax.

Sleep is therefore one of the areas I look at closely when working with clients experiencing stress, anxiety or burnout.

Do you use supplements for nervous system support?

Where appropriate, nutritional and herbal supplementation may form part of a treatment plan.

Any recommendations need to take into account your symptoms, medications, health history, diet and what else may be contributing.

Supplements should support the overall treatment strategy rather than replace the fundamentals of sleep, nutrition, movement and appropriate psychological or medical support.

Can nutrition affect the nervous system?

Yes. The nervous system requires adequate nutrition to function normally, and eating patterns can influence energy, concentration and how we feel throughout the day.

I look at things such as meal regularity, protein intake, overall dietary quality, caffeine and alcohol intake and whether someone may be under-eating during particularly stressful periods.

Depending on the individual, we may also discuss whether blood testing for particular nutrients or other health markers should be considered through their GP.

Can gut health affect the nervous system?

Yes. The gut and nervous system are closely connected through what is commonly known as the gut-brain axis, with communication occurring in both directions.

This means that periods of stress and anxiety can sometimes affect digestion, while ongoing digestive symptoms can also influence how someone feels physically and emotionally.

When I’m working with someone experiencing anxiety, chronic stress, fatigue or poor sleep, I’ll still ask about their digestive health as part of understanding the broader picture. We can also run microbiome testing too.

What does treatment with a nervous system naturopath involve?

Depending on the individual, treatment may involve nutrition, sleep support, exercise and movement, reducing excessive stimulants, stress-management strategies, nervous-system regulation, microbiome and gut health, hormone balancing, and targeted nutritional or herbal supplementation where appropriate.

How long does it take to feel better after chronic stress or burnout?

This varies considerably.

Someone who has experienced a particularly stressful few weeks is very different from someone who has been pushing through exhaustion and poor sleep for several years.

Rather than promising a quick fix, I prefer to identify the factors that appear to be placing the greatest strain on the person and work through them gradually.

For many people, rebuilding energy and resilience is a process rather than something that changes overnight.

Where can I see a nervous system naturopath?

I consult with The Naturopathic Co. via Telehealth for clients throughout Australia.

My approach is centred around understanding what has been happening in your life and health, identifying factors that may be contributing to stress, anxiety, poor sleep or fatigue, and developing a practical treatment strategy to support your nervous system and overall wellbeing.

If you’ve been feeling constantly stressed, anxious, overwhelmed, exhausted or unable to properly switch off, a naturopathic consultation can provide an opportunity to look at the bigger picture and determine what support may be appropriate for you.
