Why clean eating doesn’t work for everyone
August 5th, 2026 + The Naturopathic Co.

Why Blanket Approach Health Foods and Supplements Don’t Work for Everyone!

One of the most common things we hear in clinic is:

“I’m eating really well, I’m taking all the supplements I think I need… so why do I still feel terrible?”

In fact, many of our patients arrive feeling incredibly frustrated because they’re genuinely trying.

They’re drinking green smoothies.

They’re having bone broth every day.

They’re taking probiotics.

They’re eating fermented foods.

They’re following advice they found online.

They’re spending hundreds of dollars on supplements.

Yet they still have bloating.

They still feel exhausted.

Their skin hasn’t improved.

Their hormones are still all over the place.

Their anxiety is still there.

Or perhaps they’ve actually started feeling worse.

If this sounds familiar, please know that you’re not alone.

One of the biggest misconceptions in the health industry is that there is a single “healthy” diet or a list of supplements that everyone should take.

The reality is much more complicated.

What is therapeutic for one person may be completely inappropriate for another.

As a Melbourne naturopath, this is something we see almost every day. Patients often come to us feeling defeated because they’re doing everything they believe they “should” be doing, yet their symptoms aren’t improving.

The good news?

This usually doesn’t mean you’re failing.

It often means you’re following advice that wasn’t designed specifically for YOUR body.

We See This Every Day in Clinic

One patient feels incredible after drinking bone broth or collagen daily, taking sea moss, or spirolina…

But the next patient is doing all of those things, and they develop more bloating, abdominal discomfort, headaches, and brain fog.

One patient introduces fermented foods and notices better digestion.

Another experiences increased bloating or feels significantly worse because their gut isn’t ready for it yet, or because histamine intolerance is part of the picture.

One patient benefits enormously from creatine.

Another develops digestive discomfort or simply notices no benefit whatsoever.

One person thrives on a high-fibre diet.

Another with active SIBO finds that increasing certain fibres dramatically worsens their bloating because those fibres provide fuel for bacteria in the small intestine.

We’ve also seen patients who have spent months avoiding foods unnecessarily because they were told something was “bad”, when in reality it wasn’t the problem at all.

Equally, we’ve seen patients forcing themselves to eat foods they dislike because social media labelled them as “gut healing”, despite those foods consistently making them feel worse.

Neither approach is personalised healthcare.

“Healthy” Doesn’t Mean “Healthy for You”

This is perhaps the most important message.

Foods are not simply “good” or “bad.”

Supplements are not simply “effective” or “ineffective.”

Everything depends on the individual.

For example:

  • Bone broth can be an excellent food for many people, but those with histamine intolerance may react because slow-cooked broths naturally accumulate histamine.
  • Fermented foods such as sauerkraut, kimchi and kefir are nutritious, yet they may worsen symptoms in people with histamine intolerance or certain forms of gut dysbiosis.
  • Probiotics are not all the same. Different strains behave differently, and some people respond beautifully while others need a completely different approach.
  • Fibre is essential for most people, but introducing large amounts too quickly -or choosing the wrong type -can worsen symptoms in some people with IBS or SIBO.
  • Some very healthy foods are quite difficult to digest, which can cause varying symptoms for people with an under-performing digestive system.
  • Even supplements with excellent research behind them, such as magnesium, creatine or NAD+ precursors, don’t produce identical results in every person.

None of these foods or supplements are “bad.”

They’re simply examples of why context matters.

This Isn’t Just What We See in Clinic – It’s What Research Shows Too

Interestingly, this individual variation isn’t unique to naturopathic practice.

It’s exactly what researchers see in clinical trials.

When a study concludes that a supplement “works,” what it’s usually reporting is the average result across hundreds of participants.

Within that study there are almost always people who experienced remarkable improvements.

Others noticed only small changes.

Some experienced no improvement at all.

A few developed side effects or discontinued treatment.

The published result represents the average – not the response of every single participant.

This is one of the reasons personalised healthcare is so important.

Rather than asking:

“What’s the best supplement?”

We ask a different question:

“What is your specific imbalance?”

That’s often where the answers are found. Testing to find out why you have certain symptoms, and understanding what is going on underneath.

At The Naturopathic Co., our goal isn’t to recommend the trendiest supplement or the latest health fad.

Our goal is to understand you.

As a gut health naturopath Melbourne patients trust, we consider your symptoms, medical history, diet, lifestyle, microbiome, hormones, pathology and previous responses to treatment before developing an individualised plan.

Because when treatment is tailored to the individual, not the latest trend, we’re far more likely to see meaningful, lasting improvements.

Whether you’re struggling with IBS, SIBO, bloating, constipation, diarrheahistamine intolerancefatiguehormonesskin concernsthyroid issuesanxiety or weight management, a personalised approach is almost always more effective than guessing which supplement might work next.
