Not only do we feel extreme fatigue when we are low in iron, but iron deficiency impairs both vitamin A (night blindness), and iodine metabolism too (needed for healthy thyroid; weight, hair thinning, fatigue, dry skin), so it can contribute to other health issues.⁠

The main food sources of iron are eggs, fish (salmon, sardines, tuna), liver, meat (beef, lamb, veal, pork), and leafy green vegetables.⁠
⁠
The best plant sources of iron are dried fruit (figs, apricots), quinoa, hemp seeds, chia seeds, pumpkin seeds, legumes, white potatoes, spinach, kelp, and spirulina.⁠

Some things that contribute to low iron issues:⁠
⁠
👉️High intake of iron inhibitors⁠
Black tea, coffee, and wine reduce absorption of iron. Phytates (legumes, nuts, grains) also reduce iron absorption. Oxalates impair the absorption of non heme iron. Oxalates are found in foods such as spinach, kale, beets, nuts (/almonds), soy, tea.⁠

👉️Heavy menstruation⁠
Menstruating women are more likely to run the risk of iron deficiency, particularly women with long cycles or heavy bleeding. ⁠

👉️Malabsorption conditions⁠
Any type of condition where there is either damage to the intestines or dysfunction in the digestive system can contribute to malabsorption (IBD, IBS, Colitis, Crohn’s Disease, SIBO, coeliac)⁠

Did you know that citrus fruits are histamine liberators? Some foods increase histamine as we consume them, other foods are liberators, meaning they help to release histamine from food. A lot of foods that are high in histamine are really healthy, which makes it even more confusing 🤦‍♀️⁠

Histamine can cause health issues for some people by giving us annoying symptoms! (see below 👇️) These symptoms are usually worse for people who have underlying gut issues. ⁠

Symptoms which may be related to histamine excess:⁠
Muscular pain, fibromyalgia⁠
Extreme fatigue, particularly after meals⁠
Nasal congestion, sneezing⁠
Bloating⁠
Stool fluctuations⁠

When I was younger I took health for granted, I didn't think about it much at all. It wasn't until I got older that I realised that if I pull all nighters I'm going to feel and look bad the next day, if I fill up on cronuts and coffee all morning I'll feel like I'm 6 months pregnant by midday, if I don't exercise I won't sleep properly, if I eat too many carbs or highly fried foods I'll get a breakout within hours. ⁠

Now as a naturopath, my non-negotiables are:⁠
Quality sleep (6-8 hours) 😴⁠
Movement every day (weights or walking, crossfit, or running)🏃‍♀️⁠
Sunlight every day (min 15 mins when I have my green tea!) 🍵⁠
