Don’t ignore digestive symptoms

Digestive symptoms can creep up on you. You can spend years trying to manage your symptoms by avoiding foods that trigger you. But after a while, you’re no longer just reacting to some foods, you have digestive symptoms such as bloating, indigestion, and fluctuating stools all the time. You reach a point where you can no longer ignore it.

A healthy gut is everything when it comes to digestion, skin, hormones, mental health, immunity and so much more.

Not only that, but so many health issues are linked to poor gut health:

◦Digestion, IBS, Colitis, Crohn’s

◦Immunity

◦Hormones

◦Sleep

◦Mental health, mood, depression, anxiety, brain fog

◦Skin; acne, psoriasis, eczema

◦All autoimmune conditions

◦Recurrent infections

◦Weight/metabolism

◦Endometriosis

Autism

Digestive discomfort, bloating (which normally worsens throughout the day), and fluctuating stools are the more common symptoms that something is not right with the digestive system.

Why are we all bloated?

Usually a combination of reasons.

Firstly, our digestive system can’t handle what we throw at it. Over-eating and under-digesting.

Secondly, the mix of bacteria in our gut is less than ideal. We have too much of the bad stuff, and not enough of the good stuff. Different strains of bacteria consume different foods. So if you’ve been binging on carbs for an extended period of time, then you’ll have different bacteria in your gut than you did before. This nasty mix of gut bacteria can start to cause trouble with digestion, bloating, and many other symptoms too.

This is why, as a practitioner I find stool testing extremely beneficial when it comes to healing digestive symptoms. Because we can see very clearly what type of bacteria/yeast/parasites are in the gut, and we can go about cleaning up the mix.

A review published in September of this year discussed the role of the gut microbiome in chronic diseases, namely autoimmune, inflammatory and cardiometabolic conditions. The author stated “it is increasingly clear that bacterial metabolites are at least in part, the key agent involved”.

Maintaining gut health and alleviating related symptoms needs not to be complicated. There are many factors that can lead to a disturbance in gut function, but finding out the underlying cause of the dysfunction is crucial, and a stool report providing a snapshot of what is inside the gut is a great place to start. The four R’s protocol (Remove, Replace, Re-inoculate, Repair) works to address the underlying causes of imbalance and aids in alleviating symptoms.

If you have digestive symptoms, don’t ignore them and hope they’ll go away. Make a time to talk to your naturopath, who can devise a tailored treatment plan to assist with your symptoms and help you be well again.
