Prebiotics vs Probiotics
July 1st, 2022 + The Naturopathic Co.

The health of our gut is immensely important, and we now know the link between gut inflammation, skin inflammation, mood disorders, lowered immunity, and a multitude of other health conditions which are influenced by the state of our gut and the diversity of our microbiota.

Studies show that cultivating diverse and beneficial gut flora is the key to strong immunity, robust digestion, detoxification, balanced moods, balanced hormones, weight loss, and longevity. It is this internal complex ecosystem, our microbiome, which keeps us in good health.
Eating prebiotic foods is a great way to encourage the growth of beneficial bacteria. Prebiotics have been shown to effect significant, positive changes in the microbiome. That’s because prebiotic fibre cannot be broken down and absorbed by our digestive tract. Instead, it travels to the colon where it serves as food for health-promoting species in the gut.

Prebiotics

Asparagus
Onions
Garlic
Leeks
Chicory
Artichoke
Dandelion
Slightly green bananas
Oats
Apples
Legumes
Cacao
Flaxseeds
Seaweed

Resistant starch is an important prebiotic for the gut too:

Green banana flour – use in cooking
Raw potato starch- use in cooking or to thicken sauces
Cooled potatoes
Cooled rice
Cooled oats
Beans/legumes
Green peas

Probiotics

Kombucha
Pickled Veg
Sauerkraut
Miso
Kefir
Kvass
Brine cured olives
Tempeh
Raw cheese
Yoghurt
Apple Cider Vinegar
Natto
Increasing healthy bacteria will be easier if you don’t have a high amount of pathogenic bacteria. For example, patients who have a parasite in their gut, often have low numbers of healthy bacteria. Always aim to encourage the increase of healthy bacteria in your gut after/ or alongside removing the nasty bacteria.
If you’d like to take out the guess work in the treatment of your digestive issues, then contact us and we’ll talk you through functional testing options. That way, we can clearly see which type of bacteria we need to eliminate and which strains we need to boost.
To treat digestive issues from the underlying cause, make time to see our South Yarra naturopath,  Brisbane naturopath, Sydney Naturopath, Perth Naturopath, Hobart naturopath, or Adelaide Naturopath, or find out if we can help you by booking a FREE 20 minute Discovery Call online via zoom
