Top antiviral herbs and their uses
May 1st, 2022 + The Naturopathic Co.

Antiviral herbs fight viral infections by inhibiting their replication. Some antiviral herbs also have the capability to boost our immune response. Some also provide further support by treating gastrointestinal issues, improving cardiovascular health, and helping to combat stress.

Let’s look at the top antiviral herbs

Licorice Root

Licorice is an anti-inflammatory herb, adrenal tonic, and provides healing to the gut lining. It also has antiviral activity due to its glycyrrhizin and triterpenoid content.

Aside from being antiviral, licorice is used to treat constipation, ulcers, reflux, adrenal depletion, PCOS, and any type of acute or chronic bronchitis or cough.

Garlic

Garlic is an amazing natural antibacterial and antiviral, as it has been shown effective against a variety of pathogenic bacteria and microorganisms as well as viruses, without also targeting beneficial bacteria in the gut at the same time.

Garlic is used effectively in treating herpes, eye infections, and ear infections. Garlic is also great at helping to control high blood pressure, and supports good cardiovascular health.

Garlic is also very effective for the common cold/flu, bronchitis, sinusitis, candida/yeast.

You can make your own garlic oil, by crushing garlic and putting into olive oil to use in cooking and drizzle over salads.

Echinacea

Echinacea is both an immune stimulant and an immune modulator. It’s great at fighting viral infections, as well as any kind of respiratory condition (cold/flu, pneumonia, bronchitis), skin condition (infections, ulcers, psoriasis, dermatitis, herpes, shingles), UTIs, kidney infections,

It contains a compound called echinacein that inhibits bacteria and viruses from penetrating healthy cells. This greatly reduces the chances of the virus replicating.

Elderberry

Elderberry has powerful antiviral properties. Research has shown that elderberry can help to shorten the duration of cold and flu symptoms.

Elderberry is also a powerful antioxidant and has immune enhancing qualities. You may want to consider an elderberry syrup over the winter period – it is also good for children.

Andrographis

Andrographis is immune enhancing and antiviral; also having anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial effects. It restrains virus replication, and so is great for all acute viral infections. It has also been shown to reduce inflammatory cytokines.

Andrographis is also useful for hepatitis infections, liver insufficiency, digestive weakness.

Olive Leaf

Olive leaf has antiviral properties, as well as being a strong antioxidant. It is great for treating the common cold, as well as chronic fatigue syndrome, hepatitis B, shingles, and UTIs.  The powerful compounds found in olive leaves (oleuropein) destroy pathogenic organisms and hinder virus replication.

Oregano

Oregano is a powerful and potent antiviral agent.

Oregano contains two powerful compounds, carvacrol and thymol, that have powerful antibacterial and antifungal properties. Oregano can be used to treat candidiasis, bronchitis, parasites, viruses, and the modification of bowel flora.

Lemonbalm

Lemonbalm is wonderful for treating insomnia, anxiety, digestive upset, fever, common cold/flu, irritable bowel, and herpes.

It has strong antiviral action, even topically.
