Gastritis Naturopath

Natural Support for Gastritis – Melbourne Naturopath & Nutritionist

Gastritis is one of those conditions that can quietly chip away at your quality of life. The burning, the nausea, the discomfort after eating, the feeling that your stomach is constantly irritated – for many people, these symptoms become so familiar that they stop expecting to feel any different.

At The Naturopathic Co., we see gastritis regularly and we know how disruptive it can be. Our naturopaths and nutritionists take a root-cause approach to gastric inflammation – looking beyond symptom suppression to understand what is driving the irritation in the first place, and how to support the stomach lining to heal properly.

We offer in-person consultations in Melbourne and telehealth appointments Australia-wide.

What Is Gastritis?

Gastritis is inflammation of the stomach lining (the gastric mucosa). It can be acute – coming on suddenly after a trigger such as a viral infection, heavy alcohol use, or certain medications – or chronic, where low-grade inflammation persists over months or years.

Chronic gastritis is particularly common and often goes unrecognised because symptoms can be vague or intermittent. Left unaddressed, ongoing gastric inflammation can impair digestion, reduce stomach acid production, affect nutrient absorption, and increase the risk of gastric ulcers.

Gastritis is distinct from reflux and heartburn, though the two frequently occur together and share some overlapping triggers.

What Causes Gastritis?

There are a number of potential contributing factors, and in many cases more than one is involved. Common drivers include:

  • Helicobacter pylori infection – one of the most common causes of chronic gastritis worldwide. Read more about our approach to H. pylori here
  • regular use of NSAIDs (aspirin, ibuprofen) or other medications that irritate the stomach lining
  • chronic stress and nervous system dysregulation – which directly affects stomach acid production and mucosal integrity
  • excess alcohol consumption
  • dietary triggers including spicy foods, coffee, and acidic foods
  • bile reflux from the small intestine into the stomach
  • autoimmune gastritis – where the immune system attacks the cells of the stomach lining
  • viral or bacterial infections
  • nutritional deficiencies affecting mucosal repair

Symptoms of Gastritis

Symptoms vary between individuals and can include:

  • burning or gnawing pain in the upper abdomen
  • nausea, particularly in the morning or before eating
  • feeling full quickly when eating
  • upper abdominal bloating and pressure
  • belching and excess gas
  • loss of appetite
  • indigestion and discomfort after meals
  • reflux and heartburn
  • vomiting in more severe cases

Some people with gastritis have very few symptoms, while others find their daily life significantly affected. Symptoms often worsen with stress, irregular eating, alcohol, or certain foods and medications.

The Gut-Stress Connection in Gastritis

Stress is one of the most underappreciated contributors to gastritis. The stomach is highly sensitive to nervous system activity – during periods of stress, anxiety, or burnout, the body’s stress response directly alters gastric acid secretion, reduces blood flow to the stomach lining, impairs mucosal repair, and disrupts the balance of the gut microbiome.

For patients with chronic or recurring gastritis, addressing stress and nervous system dysregulation is often just as important as dietary and supplemental support. Without this piece, the stomach lining struggles to fully heal.

Our Approach to Gastritis

At The Naturopathic Co., we take the time to understand your individual picture – how long symptoms have been present, what makes them better or worse, your stress levels and lifestyle, your diet, and whether there are any potential underlying drivers such as H. pylori that need to be investigated.

Naturopathic support for gastritis may include:

  • herbal medicine with specific gastric mucosal healing, anti-inflammatory, and soothing actions
  • nutritional support for stomach lining repair
  • dietary guidance – identifying and managing personal triggers without unnecessary restriction
  • assessment and treatment of H. pylori where relevant
  • gut microbiome support
  • nervous system and stress management strategies
  • review of nutritional deficiencies associated with impaired stomach function (B12, iron, zinc)
  • practitioner-only supplements
  • functional testing where appropriate

Gastritis and Nutrient Absorption

The stomach plays a critical role in digesting protein and absorbing certain nutrients – particularly vitamin B12, iron, and zinc. Chronic gastritis and reduced stomach acid production (hypochlorhydria) can significantly impair absorption of these nutrients over time, contributing to fatigue, poor immune function, mood changes, and broader health concerns.

Assessing and addressing nutritional deficiencies is an important part of managing gastritis from a naturopathic perspective. Our team uses functional testing to investigate nutritional status where needed.

Autoimmune Gastritis

Autoimmune gastritis is a specific form of chronic gastritis in which the immune system produces antibodies against the parietal cells of the stomach lining – the cells responsible for producing stomach acid and intrinsic factor (needed for B12 absorption). This can lead to pernicious anaemia, significant B12 deficiency, and profound fatigue.

If you have been diagnosed with autoimmune gastritis or pernicious anaemia, our team can provide additional naturopathic support alongside your medical care. You can read more about our broader approach to autoimmune conditions here.

Testing We May Recommend

Depending on your individual case, we may recommend:

  • H. pylori testing (stool antigen, breath test, or serology)
  • comprehensive gut microbiome testing (CDSA)
  • nutritional deficiency panels – B12, iron studies, zinc, vitamin D
  • gut inflammation markers
  • broader pathology investigation
