Brain fog is one of those symptoms that is incredibly common yet often dismissed – partly because it is hard to describe, and partly because standard blood tests rarely identify it. But if you have ever felt like you are thinking through cotton wool, struggling to find words mid-sentence, forgetting things you should easily remember, or simply unable to think clearly no matter how much sleep you get – you know exactly how debilitating it can be.
Brain fog is not a diagnosis. It is a symptom – and like all symptoms, it has underlying drivers. At The Naturopathic Co., identifying those drivers is exactly what we do. Our Melbourne naturopaths and nutritionists take a thorough approach to cognitive symptoms, looking at the gut-brain connection, inflammation, hormones, nutritional status, blood sugar, thyroid function, and sleep – because brain fog almost always reflects something systemic rather than something purely neurological.
We offer in-person consultations in Melbourne and telehealth appointments Australia-wide, including Sydney and Brisbane.
Brain fog presents differently for different people, but common descriptions include:
For many patients, brain fog significantly affects work performance, relationships, and quality of life – yet they are told their results are normal and there is nothing to investigate.
The gut and brain are in constant bidirectional communication via the gut-brain axis – a network involving the vagal nerve, neurotransmitter production, and immune signalling. When the gut microbiome is imbalanced, intestinal permeability is increased, or gut inflammation is present, these signals directly affect brain function, mood, and cognitive clarity. The gut produces approximately 90 percent of the body’s serotonin – a neurotransmitter critical for cognition as well as mood.
Many patients are surprised to find that addressing gut health produces a dramatic improvement in brain fog. Read more about our approach to digestive health and leaky gut.
Chronic low-grade inflammation – whether driven by gut dysbiosis, diet, chronic stress, or immune dysregulation – can cross the blood-brain barrier and impair neurological function directly. Neuroinflammation disrupts neurotransmitter balance, slows cognitive processing, and contributes to the heavy, foggy quality of thinking that many patients describe. Reducing systemic and gut-driven inflammation is often one of the most effective interventions for brain fog.
The brain is the body’s most glucose-dependent organ. When blood sugar is unstable – spiking after meals and then crashing – cognitive function fluctuates dramatically. The afternoon slump, the inability to concentrate before lunch, the mental fuzziness after a high-carbohydrate meal – these are all blood sugar-driven cognitive symptoms. Stabilising blood sugar is often one of the fastest ways to improve mental clarity. Read more about insulin resistance.
Brain fog is one of the most consistent symptoms of hypothyroidism and Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. The brain is highly sensitive to thyroid hormone levels, and even subclinical thyroid dysfunction – below the threshold for a formal diagnosis – can significantly impair cognitive function, memory, and mental processing speed. Read more about our approach to thyroid health.
Several nutritional deficiencies directly impair cognitive function. Vitamin B12 deficiency – particularly common in vegetarians, vegans, and those on long-term proton pump inhibitors – causes neurological symptoms including brain fog, poor memory, and difficulty concentrating. Iron deficiency impairs oxygen delivery to the brain. Vitamin D deficiency is strongly associated with cognitive symptoms. Omega-3 fatty acids are structural components of brain cell membranes and essential for neurotransmitter function. Magnesium deficiency impairs synaptic signalling and cognitive performance.
Elevated cortisol – from chronic stress and HPA axis dysregulation – has a direct neurotoxic effect on the hippocampus, the brain region most involved in memory formation and recall. Prolonged stress literally impairs the brain’s ability to form and retrieve memories, and creates the characteristic fog of someone running on empty. Read more about stress and adrenal fatigue.
The brain clears metabolic waste products – including amyloid proteins associated with neurodegeneration – primarily during deep sleep via the glymphatic system. When sleep is consistently poor or unrefreshing, this clearance process is impaired and cognitive symptoms accumulate. Read more about our approach to sleep problems and insomnia.
Oestrogen plays a significant neuroprotective role, and drops in oestrogen during perimenopause and menopause are a very common trigger for sudden onset brain fog in women. Progesterone also has calming, cognitive-supporting effects. Testosterone – relevant for both men and women – supports focus, drive, and cognitive clarity. Read more about hormonal imbalance.
Post-viral brain fog – particularly following COVID-19 – has become increasingly prevalent and is now a well-recognised clinical presentation. It shares features with ME/CFS-related cognitive impairment and responds to similar naturopathic approaches targeting neuroinflammation, mitochondrial function, gut health, and immune regulation.
