Stress has become so normalised in modern life that many people no longer recognise how significantly it is affecting their health. Feeling wired but exhausted, struggling to switch off, waking at 3am with a racing mind, relying on caffeine to get through the day, and crashing completely on weekends – these are not just signs of a busy life. They are signs that the body’s stress response system is under serious strain.
At The Naturopathic Co., we take a thorough and evidence-informed approach to stress and adrenal health. Our Melbourne naturopaths and nutritionists understand how profoundly chronic stress affects hormones, gut health, immunity, metabolism, mood, and energy – and we work with you to address the root causes rather than simply managing symptoms.
We offer in-person consultations in Melbourne and telehealth appointments Australia-wide, including Sydney and Brisbane.
The stress response – often called the fight or flight response – is designed to be short-term. In acute stress situations, cortisol and adrenaline are released to sharpen focus, increase energy, and prepare the body for action. Once the threat passes, the system is designed to return to baseline.
The problem is that modern life rarely allows for that recovery. When stress is chronic – ongoing work pressure, financial concerns, relationship strain, overcommitment, poor sleep, or even physiological stressors like gut dysbiosis and inflammation – the adrenal glands are asked to produce stress hormones continuously. Over time, this sustained demand takes a significant toll on health across virtually every body system.
Chronic stress has been shown to contribute to:
Adrenal fatigue is a term used to describe a state of adrenal insufficiency that develops after prolonged stress – where the adrenal glands have been working overtime for so long that their output of cortisol and other stress hormones becomes dysregulated. It is also referred to as HPA axis dysregulation (hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis dysregulation), which more accurately describes the broader hormonal communication breakdown involved.
It is worth noting that adrenal fatigue as a distinct clinical diagnosis is not universally recognised in conventional medicine – however the pattern of symptoms associated with HPA axis dysregulation is very real and very commonly seen in clinical practice. Many patients who come to us with this presentation have been told their blood tests are normal, yet feel far from well.
Common signs of adrenal fatigue and HPA axis dysregulation include:
Standard blood cortisol testing provides only a single snapshot and misses the dynamic pattern of cortisol throughout the day. At The Naturopathic Co., we use salivary or urinary cortisol testing where appropriate – which measures cortisol at multiple points across the day and provides a far more accurate picture of adrenal function and HPA axis activity.
This allows us to identify whether cortisol is elevated, suppressed, or dysregulated – and at what time of day – so that treatment can be precisely targeted to the individual pattern. Read more about our approach to functional testing.
Cortisol does not operate in isolation. Chronically elevated or dysregulated cortisol directly affects:
For this reason, addressing stress and adrenal health often produces improvements across many areas of health simultaneously.
