PCOS Naturopath

PCOS is one of the most common hormonal conditions affecting women of reproductive age, yet it is frequently dismissed, mismanaged, or treated with a one-size-fits-all approach. If you have been told to simply go on the pill, lose weight, or come back when you want to get pregnant, you are not alone – and you deserve better than that.

At The Naturopathic Co., our naturopaths take a thorough, investigative approach to PCOS. We identify the specific hormonal and metabolic drivers behind your presentation and build a personalised treatment plan that actually addresses the cause. We consult Australia-wide via telehealth and have helped hundreds of women with PCOS achieve real, lasting change.

What Is PCOS?

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome is a hormonal condition characterised by excess androgens (male hormones), disrupted ovulation, and in many cases, insulin resistance. Despite the name, not everyone with PCOS has cysts on their ovaries – and not everyone with ovarian cysts has PCOS. The diagnosis is based on a combination of symptoms, blood markers, and ultrasound findings.

PCOS is not a single condition with a single cause. There are several distinct subtypes, each requiring a different approach. This is why a thorough assessment and functional testing are so important before beginning treatment.

Symptoms of PCOS

PCOS presents differently in every woman. Common symptoms include irregular or absent periods, acne or oily skin, hair thinning or hair loss on the scalp, excess facial or body hair, weight gain or difficulty losing weight, fatigue and low energy, anxiety or mood instability, and difficulty conceiving.

Many women with PCOS also experience bloatingIBS-type symptoms, and food sensitivities – which are not coincidental. The connection between gut health and PCOS is significant, and we will explain why below.

The Gut-PCOS Connection

Emerging research has established a clear link between the gut microbiome and PCOS. Women with PCOS consistently show lower microbial diversity and higher levels of inflammatory bacteria compared to those without the condition. This gut dysbiosis contributes to PCOS through several mechanisms.

A disrupted gut microbiome impairs the clearance of oestrogen through a process involving a group of gut bacteria known as the estrobolome. When oestrogen is not properly eliminated, it recirculates in the body, worsening oestrogen dominance and amplifying hormonal symptoms. Poor gut health also drives systemic inflammation, worsens insulin resistance, and disrupts the gut-brain axis in ways that affect cortisol and androgen production.

Conditions such as leaky gutSIBO, and candida overgrowth are common in women with PCOS and frequently go unaddressed. At The Naturopathic Co., we assess and treat the gut as part of every PCOS treatment plan where relevant, because ignoring it limits results.

How We Treat PCOS Naturopathically

Our approach to PCOS is never generic. Treatment is built around your specific subtype, your test results, and your individual health goals – whether that is regulating your cycle, clearing your skin, losing weight, or preparing for pregnancy.

Treatment may include targeted nutritional medicine to support insulin sensitivity, androgen balance, and ovulation, herbal medicine including adaptogens and cycle-regulating herbs, dietary guidance specific to your PCOS subtype, gut health treatment where microbiome disruption is contributing to hormonal symptoms, stress and nervous system support where cortisol is a driver, and blood sugar regulation strategies to address insulin resistance.

We do not push unnecessary supplements. Every recommendation is purposeful and grounded in your clinical picture.

PCOS and Fertility

PCOS is one of the leading causes of ovulatory infertility. If you are planning to conceive, naturopathic pre-conception care can significantly improve your chances by restoring regular ovulation, improving egg quality, and optimising your nutritional status ahead of pregnancy.

The health of your gut microbiome is also directly relevant to fertility and to the health of your future baby. Research shows that the maternal microbiome is transferred to the child at birth and in early life, influencing the development of the infant’s immune system, nervous system, and long-term health. Pre-conception gut health is therefore not just about you – it is about giving your baby the best possible start. Learn more about our pre-conception and fertility support.

PCOS Testing

Accurate testing is the foundation of effective PCOS treatment. Through our functional testing partners, we can assess androgens including testosterone and DHEA, oestrogen and progesterone across the cycle, insulin and blood sugar markers, cortisol and adrenal function, thyroid hormones, and gut microbiome health via comprehensive stool analysis.

All test kits are shipped to your home. Results are reviewed thoroughly at your follow-up appointment and used to guide a precise, targeted treatment plan. Learn more about hormone testing options.

PCOS and Skin

Hormonal acne is one of the most distressing symptoms of PCOS for many women. It is driven by elevated androgens stimulating excess sebum production, combined with inflammation and often poor gut clearance of hormones. Our naturopaths treat hormonal acne as part of a whole-system approach – addressing the hormonal drivers, gut health, and skin-specific nutrition together.
